san blas

trust me, it’s paradise.
in the haze of infatuation, it’s just what you’ve been searching for all these years.

new tribes, new jungle roads, new eclipses of the heart
sending regards to captain marcos as we embark.

this is where the hungry

on the open ocean for the first time

for mine is a generation that circles the globe
and searches for something we haven’t tried before.

fat bodies float in saline marine baths as i glimpse
your long torso underwater,
a school of humans in kuna territory.

so never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar,
never fail to be polite
and never outstay the welcome.

the fire sting of dark red coral against my arm,
fire hue of my lower back skin and still

you and i

we land among the reef creatures
and tell each other the barracudas are much farther out

just keep your mind open and suck in the experience.

sunsick, seasick
sophie says in her tiny french voice,

“it is not the sea we should be afraid of.”

it is the land.

and if it hurts, you know what?
it’s probably worth it.
